Yesterday, a federal jury in New York found R&B singer, Robert Sylvester Kelly, commonly known as R. Kelly, guilty of charges including sexual exploitation of a child, bribery, racketeering and sex trafficking involving five victims. He was convicted of leading a decades-long sex crime ring that lured women and children to be sexually abused by him.

Many of the allegations heard in the trial were first laid out in the 2019 documentary, ‘Surviving R Kelly’, in which there were claims of shocking, decades-long abuse that predominantly targeted Black women and children. During the trial, the court also heard how Kelly had illegally obtained paperwork to marry the late singer, Aaliyah, when she was just 15 years old.

Kelly, who has been jailed without bail since 2019, faces a possible sentence of 10 years to life in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for 4 May 2022.
