The coming of social media especially Instagram, has brought many opportunities to young Nigerian creatives who have used virtual platforms to express their talents. Many have become actors, influencers, comedians, singers, brand ambassadors, advocates and entrepreneurs . As the social media space is evolving, opportunities are also expanding.

Before now, a lot of upcoming comedians auditioned to be cast in realty shows, talent hunts and other competitions, hoping to get that big break that would launch them to stardom. Today, after years of toiling, disappointments, rejections, failing, hard work and persistence, our creatives have have come out better and brighter. They are amazingly good at what they do and like I said, they make us laugh, cry and reflect at our common humanity. Some of them have won huge fans, awards and certifications on other platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, got endorsements for family brands and invitations for social and corporate engagements. These young talents are smiling to the banks and counting their blessings.

However, we need to mention that some older comedians have made sacrifices and laid the foundation which these young celebrities are building on. 1 Brodashaggi


Samuel Animashaun Perry (born September 19, 1993), better known as Broda Shaggi, is a Nigerian comedian, actor, songwriter and musician. At a young age, he took interest in acting drama as influenced by his late father, who was a drama teacher. Broda Shaggi is a graduate of Creative Arts from the University of Lagos. The main album (Oya hit me skits vol. 1) 2019 shot him to limelight..

His singles include Ori (2019), Bushman (2019), Shi (2019), Serere (2019), Nor Nor 2019), “Wake up” (2019), “Black Skin Boy” (2019).

He has also featured in a couple of movies including Ghetto Bred – 2018, Aiyetoro Town – 2019, Fate of Alakada: The Party Planner – 2020, Namaste Wahala – 2020, Dwindle – 2021, Day Of Destiny – 2021 and The Miracle Centre – 2020.

Brodashaggi has been nominated for several awards, among which is the Most Popular Comedian at the Net Honours Awards 2021. He won The Force of Comedy Skits at the Trenduup Awards 2021. He also won an award for 1 million subscribers on YouTube. He has 9.2 million followers on Instagram.

2. Lasisi Elenu

Nosa Afolabi (born 20 April 1991), better known as Lasisi Elenu, is a Nigerian comedian, actor, compere and musician from Offa, Kwara state, North central Nigeria. One of Africa’s most popular social media influencers, he is known for his skits with a ‘wide mouth’ disguise filter during performances and on social media. Elenu recently featured in Netflix thriller, The Ghost and the Tout. He is a graduate of Health Promotion and Environmental Health Education from the University of Ilorin.

In 2018, he was nominated for The Future Awards Africa Prize for Comedy. In March 2020, he was named one of Nigeria’s Top 25 Under-30 Nigerian Superstars.

The comedian is one of the continent’s most popular social media influencers with 75,000 followers on Tiktok. His skits focus on various themes from law to cybercrime, the economy, insecurity and philosophy. He started out as a musician before diverting to the business of comedy. His most recent project, Mama & Papa Godspower, is a series of 16-minute episodes focusing on a low-income households in Nigeria.

Emmanuel Ogonna Iwueke, popularly known as Craze Clown or Papa Ade is a Nigerian comedian, actor and cinematographer. He is popular for slapping his counterpart Ade in his comedy skit. Craze Clown was born on 24th of December 1991 to the family of Godwin Uchenna Iwueke and Grace Acheche. His father is from Imo state while his mother is from Edo State.

He obtained his SSCE certificate from St Thomas Secondary School Kano, and proceeded to study medicine at Kharkov National Medical University, Ukraine.

Craze Clown started off as a stand up comedian in 2013. However while in the university, he started shooting comedy skits with his roommate, Tega. He was among the first set of people to begin Instagram comedy in Nigeria.

Craze Clown was popular for portraying the relationship between a Nigerian father and his son.

He has won scores of awards including Naija Youths Choice and Naija FM Comedy Awards.He is currently a brand ambassador of NairaBet.Craze Clown is estimated to worth $100,000. He makes an average of $100-$500 daily from his comedy skits on YouTube.

He has 4.3 million followers on Instagram.


Gloria Oloruntobi (born February 6, 1997), better known as Maraji, is a Nigerian comedienne. She started her career making lip sync videos and miming songs. Maraji role-plays in her comedy skits and switches between accents and vocal pitches to suit each character she plays.

Maraji is from Edo State, southern Nigeria. She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Covenant University in 2017. Maraji is also a video vixen. She has featured in several music videos, including Falz’s Something Light and Yemi Alade’s Single and Searching.

She was nominated for Prize for Comedy at the 2017 and 2018 The Future Awards Africa. She was also nominated for Comedy Act of the Year at the 2018 City People Music Awards.

She has 1.2 million followers on Instagram.


Maryam Apaokagi (born 28 February 1999) known professionally as Taaooma, is a Nigerian comedian, content creator, cinematographer, and social media influencer. She is known for acting multiple roles in her comedy skits.

Apaokagi was born in Nigeria but spent most of her early years in Namibia. She studied Tourism and Travel Service Management at the Kwara State University. In 2015, she started online comedy after convincing her fiancé to teach her the basics of video editing. She rose to stardom in 2019 with a skit based on African parents taking their children to school.

In 2019, she was the face of Media Room Hub’s July Issue. Her comedy skits are centered on exposing African mothers and their unique manner of disciplining African children with slaps.

On 8 November 2020, she was part of The Future Awards Africa: Class of 2020 for the prize of content creation (YouTubers, Vloggers). Apaokagi also made The Guardian Nigeria’s list of 100 Most Inspiring Women in the country.

She has 2.9 million followers on Instagram.


Emanuella Samuel (born July 22, 2010), popularly known as Emanuella, is an 11 year old YouTube child comedian on Mark Angel’s YouTube channel. Emmanuella’s first appearance was on episode 34, titled “Who Mess?”

Emanuella is from Imo State South East Nigeria. She was born in Port Harcourt in Rivers State (South South Nigeria). She made her foray into comedy at the age of five, when she was on a family holiday and met with Angel. He needed some children for his comedy shoot, and called a few children he knew for the audition, but they couldn’t memorize their lines and he then turned to Emanuella. Despite the eighteen hour long video shoot, a stunt he pulled to test the endurance of the kids, Emanuella did well.

In 2018, Emanuella was invited to the National Assembly by former Senate President Bukola Saraki on account of her landing a role in a Disney film. She made the announcement of her role in the Disney film on her Instagram handle.

In 2016, Emanuella won the award for Top Subscribed Creator from YouTube at the inaugural edition of the Sub-Saharan African YouTube Awards. She also won the Best New Comedienne & Princess of Comedy awards at the Afro-Australia Music & Movie Awards (AAMMA). She was hosted by CNN in November 2016.

In 2015, she won the G-Influence Niger Delta Special Talent Award. In 2018, she was nominated alongside Davido, for Nickelodeon 2018 Kid’s Choice Awards, under the category of Favorite African Stars, and in 2021, she won the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Award for Favorite African Social Star.

Last year, Emanuella set social media abuzz when she announced that she gifted her mother a house. “I built this for you mom.” the proud comedienne wrote.

The Mark Angel Comedy channel has 7.99m subscribers on YouTube and 764,000 followers on Instagram.
